Date: March 9, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Yesterday, Rep. Elaine Luria (VA-02), voted for H.Con.Res. 70, a bipartisan resolution she cosponsored that condemns the recent threats of violence against Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country and supports HBCU students, faculty, and staff.

On January 4, 2022, Norfolk State University (NSU) and HBCUs across the country received bomb threats. Another threat was also made against NSU on February 25. A bomb threat was also made against Hampton University on February 23. Additionally, six HBCUs received bomb threats on January 31, and 18 HBCUs received bomb threats on February 1.

"The bomb threats made against HBCUs in Virginia and across the country in recent weeks during Black History Month are deeply concerning and should be investigated thoroughly," Rep. Luria said. "I am proud to have cosponsored and voted for this bipartisan resolution to condemn these racially motivated crimes and to support our HBCU students and staff. As a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure the safety of our HBCUs."

The FBI continues to investigate the bomb threats as racially or ethnically motivated violent extremism and hate crimes.

More than 60 organizations from around the country supported the resolution co-sponsored by Rep. Luria, including: American Association of Colleges and Universities, American Association of Community Colleges, American Federation of Teachers, National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.
